A 14-year-old boy from Hungary saved the life of his 12-year-old brother at Lake Millstätter See in Carinthia on Tuesday. The boys were swimming in the grounds of a campsite in Döbriach when the 12-year-old suddenly went down. His brother acted with quick wit and kept him afloat until help arrived.
Around 5.40 pm the brothers went into the 16 degrees warm water in the vicinity of the campsite. When the two were five meters from shore, the 12-year-old suddenly went down. His 14-year-old brother immediately sprang into action, holding the 12-year-old up and shouting loudly for help. A camper, a 57-year-old holidaymaker from Germany, became aware of the situation and immediately jumped into the water and was able to pull the victim ashore.
The German performed first aid until rescuers arrived. The 12-year-old reacted all the way, but had received a shock. After receiving first medical attention, he was flown to the LKH Villach with the rescue helicopter RK 1 to clarify his state of health. The brothers’ parents were notified of the incident. The mother accompanied her son to the hospital.
