In an accident in a Chicago suburb, a child accidentally shot and killed a four-year-old girl. The father of the killed child and the owner of the gun alerted River Grove police on Wednesday, authorities said. Arriving officers found “a child accidentally shot by another child from the same household”. The little girl later succumbed to her injuries.
The father, a holder of a valid gun license, said he kept the gun in an upper compartment of a cabinet, police said. Authorities launched an investigation into what police said was an “unfortunate incident”.
Police have not provided information on the age and gender of the child who died. The “Chicago Sun-Times” newspaper reported, citing the coroner’s office, that the victim was a four-year-old girl. There was no information about the child who fired the gun.
Each year in the United States, 19,000 children are killed by gunfire
Firearm incidents in which children are killed or injured – sometimes at the hands of other children – still occur in the United States. According to the Everytown for Gun Safety organization, which advocates for stricter gun laws, 19,000 children are killed or injured by gunfire each year.
39 million firearms in the US
There are an estimated 393 million publicly owned firearms in the United States. That means 120 firearms per 100 inhabitants. More than 20,200 people were killed by guns last year, not counting suicides, according to the specialist website Gun Violence Archive. Attempts to tighten gun laws repeatedly fail due to opposition from conservative Republicans and the powerful gun lobby.
