German investigators searched an apartment for those responsible for the attack on the Nord Stream pipelines. DNA is said to have been taken from a child – does that lead to the perpetrators?
As WDR, NDR and “Süddeutsche Zeitung” reported on Thursday, citing the Federal Attorney General, the Federal Criminal Investigation Department identified a woman as a witness and searched her apartment at the end of May.
According to the report, she is said to be the former partner of a Ukrainian accused of involvement in the attack. According to NDR, WDR and “SZ”, detectives seized the woman’s mobile phone and took DNA traces from an apparently common child of the witness and the suspect to compare with traces from the sailing yacht “Andromeda”.
Is it just a false flag operation?
This could thicken the suspicions against the Ukrainian. So far, however, the federal prosecutor’s office has only confirmed that the apartment of a “non-suspicious person in Frankfurt (Oder)” has been searched.
According to the investigation, the yacht is the most concrete lead the investigators have so far regarding the Nord Stream explosions, so it leads to the vicinity of the Ukrainian military. However, it cannot be ruled out that this track was deliberately laid by others as part of a so-called false flag operation.
Trace to Russia not yet silted up
It is therefore still unclear who was actually responsible for the explosions on the Nord Stream pipeline. Immediately after the explosions, Russia came under suspicion – a suspicion that has not yet been dispelled. Not only would such an attack fit the picture of hybrid warfare against the West, it is still unclear why Russian special ships for underwater operations were at the crime scene just days before the attack.
Focus on Ukrainian soldier
However, that was also the case in March It was suspected that a “pro-Ukrainian group” might be behind it. Accordingly, the 15-meter yacht “Andromeda” would have brought a lot of explosives near the Danish island of Bornholm and attached them to the pipelines. Experts | but have so far doubted the theory, as the ship was not designed for such payloads.
Investigations in this case led to a 26-year-old Ukrainian soldier who would have been one of the crew members. He would also have come into the crosshairs of the authorities because of a false passport, which he would have shown when renting the ship. Still, it cannot be ruled out that previously unknown actors tampered with the line. The international investigations are ongoing.
