“A shame” – fuss over vegan schnitzel at gastro legend

Date:

Vegan food is trendy, but when the “Heimat des Schnitzels”, as the company Figlmüller calls itself on its website, advertises a plant-based alternative on the menu, it irritates, at least with some. One Facebook user even wrote of an “embarrassment”.

The Wiener Schnitzel, originally made from veal, is appreciated and loved in many places – even if the “alternative” of pork is usually offered. According to legend, it was brought to Vienna by the Austrian Imperial and Royal Field Marshal Johann Radetzky from the Italian campaign. Only in areas where the historic food culture is not cultivated in this way is the crispy, fluffy breadcrumbs topped with any kind of sauce – unthinkable in this country.

Anger on Facebook: ‘I no longer understand the world’
Now the renowned catering company Figlmüller, a breading legend in Vienna and the destination of thousands of schnitzel lovers year after year, advertises a different kind of alternative: “With the planted.schnitzel, we are going to set completely new standards with the help of eatplanted. It is made from sunflowers, oats and peas.” Under the Facebook post, some users immediately vented their anger, so the company limited the comment function.

“No no! It doesn’t have to be!” One declared carnivore wrote underneath, another even described the offer as “a pity”. Another user wrote: “I don’t understand the world anymore!” There was no response to the company’s own comments.

Schnitzel legend in Vienna
Two years ago, Figlmüller put the vegan “Schnitzel” on the menu, and the breading was also adapted accordingly, because the original contains eggs. In any case, you should only appeal to a small part of the clientele. Most guests and also numerous tourists will probably continue to visit the restaurants of the Figlmüller family because of the meaty “crumb carpet” – and sometimes even have to wait in a long queue in front of the restaurant.
