New variants – EMA: “Coronavirus is and will remain a threat!”

Date:

During its last regular press conference on the coronavirus, the EU medicines agency EMA warned of the continued danger of Covid-19. “This virus remains a threat, especially to the most vulnerable,” said EMA Vaccination Strategy Officer Marco Cavaleri. From a legal point of view, Corona will also be treated in Austria in the same way as all non-notifiable infectious diseases from July.

The virus is still circulating and new variants are emerging. Health authorities must remain vigilant, especially in winter, the EMA calls – even though there has been no global health emergency since the beginning of last month. Work is also continuing on new vaccines.

Boss praised his own authority
EMA boss Emer Cooke praised the work of her authority on Tuesday. She made possible the “largest vaccination program in the history of Europe”. Cooke also cited estimates that coronavirus vaccines saved some 20 million lives in the first year of their use alone.

Future non-notifiable infectious disease
From July, Corona will be legally treated as all non-notifiable infectious diseases. As a result, the costs of testing from 1 July will only be reimbursed by health insurance for people with complaints. However, a general testing infrastructure must be ensured.

The infrastructure for vaccinations is also arranged in the template. The provisions for corona medicines will largely be maintained. It is also the intention to continue the monitoring programs.

The reason for the change is the higher baseline immunity and the mild course of the disease due to the prevailing virus variants and the resulting lower risk to health and the health system.
