After Mike Pence, former New Jersey governor Chris Christie now wants to run in the 2024 US presidential election. The field for the Republican primaries continues to grow.
Former Vice President Mike Pence is expected to announce his candidacy Wednesday in the US state of Iowa and on Monday he submitted his election papers. The clearly favored Trump had already declared in November that he wanted to retake the White House in the 2024 presidential election.
Chris Christie is an outsider at best, coming in with just 1 percent in the RealClearPolitics.com poll.
2013 “Bridgegate” caused
Christie is hampered from his time as governor by a bridge-closing scandal, allegedly intended to punish a mayor who disagreed with him. The 2013 case became known as “Bridgegate”. However, an investigation later found no evidence that Christie had ordered the partial closure of the bridge.
Trump is Putin’s puppet
In recent years, Christie has increasingly appeared as a Trump critic. Only recently did he describe the ex-president as a “coward” and “puppet” of Russian President Vladimir Putin for his stance on the war in Ukraine (see tweet below). Of the Trump challengers, the 60-year-old has been the most aggressive to date.
More challengers for Biden
The Republican primaries begin early next year, traditionally in the US state of Iowa in the Midwest. The winner of the Republican primary will face Democratic incumbent Joe Biden, who is running for a second term despite his advanced age.
