Photos show Inferno – 700 rescuers averted major drama in the tunnel

Date:

It is thanks to the quick action of 700 rescue workers that the fire in a Tyrolean railway tunnel did not end in a major drama. The “Tiroler Krone” received photos from the inside from Anton Wegscheider of the state fire brigade association. Governor Anton Mattle thanked the rescuers and spoke of “luck in adversity”.

The large-scale operation took place at around 8:45 p.m. on Wednesday evening. Shortly before that, the car train drove through the Terfentunnel near Fritzens (Innsbruck-Land district). As the country announced, a faulty overhead wire may have fallen on the car transporter vehicle and night train and set two cars on fire. There were 151 passengers on the train.

About 700 emergency services from the fire brigade, ambulance, police and authorities came to the scene. 33 people were taken to nearby hospitals with minor injuries.

Train restored, no restrictions on rail traffic
The night train that caught fire was recovered on Thursday morning and driven back to Innsbruck’s main station. The onward journey of the approximately 50 passengers who were taken to Innsbruck was organized. There are no rail traffic restrictions. According to ÖBB, the trains can be diverted.

“According to the current state of knowledge, we can speak of happiness in disguise. It is thanks to the rapid preparedness of the blue light organizations and the authorities that no disaster happened,” said LH Anton Mattle, who thanked the 700 emergency services.
