Dam failure – Ukraine: recording proves Russian demolition

Date:

There are many indications that the Russian occupier destroyed the Kakhovka dam, and Ukraine now wants proof of that. Ukraine’s internal secret service SBU has published a recorded telephone conversation between soldiers, which is supposed to prove that Russian saboteurs blew up the hydroelectric power plant and dam in the southern Ukrainian region of Kherson. Seismological data supports this accusation.

In the one and a half minute audio recording, two men talk in Russian about the consequences of breaking the dam. “They (the Ukrainians) have not met him. That was our sabotage group,” says one of the men. He is described by the SBU as a Russian soldier. They wanted to sow terror. “It didn’t go according to plan and they did more than planned.”

Plant is controlled by Russians
The man adds that thousands of animals have died in a safari park downriver. The other participant in the conversation is amazed at the image that Russian troops allegedly destroyed the hydroelectric power station and the dam. The facility is under the control of Russian forces. Thousands of people had to flee the affected areas on the Dnipro River because of the flooding caused by the devastation.

The telephone recording has also been posted on YouTube. The authenticity has not yet been verified.

Russia and Ukraine blame each other for the destruction. The Kremlin has not yet commented on the recording submitted by Ukraine. The situation – the military advantage and the procedure used in the demolition – indicates that Russia is behind the destruction, as the Bundesheer Major General Günther Hofbauer recently stated in the “ZiB 2” on Friday evening.

“I’m sure there was an explosion”
There is growing evidence that the dam was deliberately destroyed and did not collapse due to damage from previous bombings. The Norwegian seismological institute Norsar detected an explosion near the dam at the time of its destruction. “We are sure there was an explosion,” Norsar boss Ben Dando told AFP on Friday.

According to the independent institute, the explosion took place at 02:54 local time on Tuesday in an area whose coordinates coincide with those of the dam on the Dnipro River. The blast’s magnitude was “between 1 and 2”. “It’s not a light explosion,” Dando explained. The event was detected by the Bukovina monitoring station in Romania, which is about 620 km away from the site of the explosion.

“Decided by Putin”
Secretary of the National Security and Defense Council, Oleksiy Danilov, compared the destruction of the dam to the “use of a tactical nuclear weapon”, given the catastrophic consequences. On Ukrainian radio, he personally blamed Kremlin chief Vladimir Putin for the war crimes. “Such decisions are made only in the Kremlin and only by Putin,” Danilov said. The consequences are also disastrous for Russia because the country will have to compensate for the damage.

According to Ukrainian sources, four people have died in the Kherson region as a result of the floods. 13 people are still missing, Interior Minister Ihor Klymenko said on Telegram. 2412 people were brought to safety. The situation for thousands of people remains threatening. The United Nations on Friday spoke of at least 17,000 people affected by the dam’s collapse — it could be as many as 40,000, they said in Geneva.

water level drops
According to the Ukrainian authorities, the water level in parts of the affected areas is now starting to fall. 35 settlements on the right bank of the Dnipro River are still under water, more than 3,700 houses are under water, “but the water is gradually receding,” said Oleksandr Prokudin, head of the Ukrainian military administration in the region Kherson, Friday.

The water level in the region fell from an average of about 5.4 meters to almost five meters during Friday, Prokudin continued. His colleague in the Mykolayiv region, Vitali Kim, also stated that the level there is falling.
