Only 14 percent of companies worldwide say they have reduced their emissions in line with their climate goals over the past five years. That is three percentage points less than in 2022, according to a global study published on Thursday by management consultancy Boston Consulting Group (BCG) and the software company CO2 AI.
Many of the companies surveyed cited difficult economic conditions and capital constraints as reasons. Furthermore, only ten percent of companies said they had comprehensively measured all their emissions – which is no improvement from last year’s survey.
“Over the past 40 years, climate-related disasters have quadrupled, and the impact of each disaster has grown 1.9 times, affecting countless communities and businesses worldwide,” the BCG said. “Despite the responsibility to mitigate the climate crisis, companies have made little progress in comprehensively measuring and reducing their emissions.”
BCG and CO2 AI surveyed a total of 1,850 executives responsible for measuring, reporting and reducing emissions in their organizations across 18 key industries and 23 countries.
