Number increased – 7.6 million people are waiting for routine surgery in England

Date:

The number of people waiting for routine surgery in England has risen again. At the end of June, there were 7.6 million patients on the waiting list, which is about 100,000 more than in May. This number represents a record since registration began in 2007.

British Prime Minister Rishi Sunak had previously promised to significantly reduce waiting times. The huge backlog is also not being cleared due to frequent strikes by various NHS professions for higher wages and better working conditions. The residents will start a multi-day strike again this Friday.

“Dark Image”
Siva Anandaciva of charity The King’s Fund said the numbers paint a “dark picture”. It is important that all parties come together and agree in the best interest of the patients, he said. About 383,000 people have been waiting for surgery for a year, slightly less than in May, and about 7,200 for more than 18 months, a significant drop from the previous month.

People sometimes stay in the emergency department for twelve hours
According to the government announcement, there should be no waiting times of at least a year and a half since April. The number of people waiting more than 12 hours in the emergency room for treatment fell 10 percent in July to about 24,000.

Health care chronically underfunded
The National Health Service (NHS) has announced that patients can be treated more quickly if they are willing and able to travel to other parts of England for the procedure. The health service is considered chronically understaffed and underfunded (see video above).
