The EU Commission approved Austria’s corona financing of 750 million euros on Thursday. Corona aid already paid does not have to be repaid anyway. Finance Minister Magnus Brunner (ÖVP) spoke of “good news” for the companies that are still waiting for the payment of the aid.
The background to the decision is that the European Commission had accused the Austrian government of not complying with the upper limit for subsidies. It would not have checked whether individual companies form a unit with subsidiaries or affiliates and whether the maximums were thus exceeded by multiple payments.
In order to clarify the outstanding questions, the government stopped paying out about 4,000 applications in the spring. “The new directive will enable those companies awaiting the payment of aid money to receive aid in line with the compensation requirements approved today by the European Commission,” Finance Minister Magnus Brunner (ÖVP) said on Thursday. The European Commission’s decision is “good news” for affected companies.
Wirtschaftsbund: “Finally decided”
However, before the funds can be disbursed, discussions with the Vice-Chancellor’s Office and the adoption of the necessary national guidelines are still needed. “The European Commission has finally decided (…). To create legal certainty for the affected companies and to avoid a deluge of lawsuits, the federal government and COFAG must now implement national guidelines as soon as possible (…)” said Kurt Egger, Secretary General of the Economic Association .
