In Peru, more than 3,400 women were reported missing from January to April this year. As the responsible ombudsman announced in a report on Saturday, only 1,902 of the 3,406 missing have been found so far.
So there would be a further search for 1504 women. The state is not taking any measures to prevent this, says Isabel Ortiz of the ombudsman. The problem of enforced disappearances, often through kidnapping and abduction, is not given a higher priority.
The police hardly investigate
In 2022, more than 5,380 women were reported missing in Peru, most of them girls and teenagers. According to feminist organizations, the police and the Public Prosecution Service in many cases do not investigate sufficiently because they assume that the women will leave voluntarily.
