We go to the ATM less and less, but the amount we withdraw is greater

The Spanish state has more than 88 million cards in circulation. Card payments at a physical terminal have increased by 63%. On the contrary, cash withdrawals from ATMs have been reduced by 25%.

Citizens went from withdrawing money at the ATM 2.3 times a month to only 1.5 times in the same time. Of course, more money is withdrawn on average than years ago (from 91 to 176 euros). That is why more and more small purchases are paid for by card and fewer people go to the ATM, but more money is withdrawn.

In addition, in two decades (2002-2020) it has gone from making 3 card payments per month per person to 16. This trend was before the pandemic, but the coronavirus has accelerated it.

The Basque Country has 10.2 ATMs per 10,000 inhabitants, according to 2022 data, and Navarre 10.8; while the average for the Spanish state is 9.5. Madrid (8), Catalonia (9.2) and Andalusia (9) have fewer ATMs than the BAC and the Foral Community, but the Balearic Islands (15.1) or the Canary Islands (14.4) have many more.

Over the last two decades, the number of ATMs has fluctuated slightly in Spain, but there are practically the same ATMs in the state as in 2000. However, the number of ATMs has tripled in 22 years: from 802,698 in 2000 to 2,361,832 in 2022.
