The Drina in eastern Bosnia is known for its emerald green waters and is popular with tourists. But the 346-kilometer watercourse, which originates in Montenegro and also runs through Serbia, has a huge environmental problem. At least twice a year, one of the region’s most beautiful rivers turns into a floating garbage island.
Melting snow or heavy rainfall wash tons of plastic waste into the river bed. The waste comes from illegal dumping islands on riverbanks in Montenegro, Serbia and Bosnia.
So far, there is no comprehensive waste management concept in the three countries. Disposing of about 15,000 cubic meters of waste on the Drina takes six months at a time.
