“Is total luxury” – Couple has been living without electricity or sewer for 20 years

Date:

Tatjana Nikitsch and Karl Jungwirth deliberately chose an extremely austere life when they moved to a remote, 100-year-old house at the foot of the Hohe Wand.

A hot shower in the morning, a cold drink from the fridge in the afternoon and an exciting series in the evening: for many, this daily routine is routine. Not so for Tatjana Nikitsch (55) and Karl Jungwirth (63). And that for about 20 years.

“It Works Without”
Because at the time the two had taken over a 100-year-old, remote house in Dreistetten in the Wiener Neustadt district, which had no electricity, gas or sewer connection. Retrofitting was out of the question for both of them. “Why? It also works without it. We lack nothing. We have a very normal everyday life, apart from small specials that are different,” says Nikitsch. This includes, for example, a longer walk to the toilet, which is located outside the house.

“Your Mind Is Free”
However, the two do not want to describe themselves as dropouts. For example, the trauma therapist and the Shiatsu practitioner regularly charge their mobile phone or laptop in their practice in Dreistetten. In their home, on the other hand, they completely do without appliances such as freezers, coffee makers, hair dryers or vacuum cleaners. “There are only a few things you need to arrange. That is total luxury, you have a clear mind and you have time for many more things,” emphasizes Jungwirth. His partner adds: “This way of thinking that something is possible without electricity hardly seems to exist nowadays.”

Retreat is rented
They also want to pass on their experience. They have built a small forest hut next to their house, which they rent out to those seeking tranquility as a place of refuge. “It is also a sacred place for us. But then we always thought, okay, that’s what other people might need, at least for a while.”

“Insane Opportunities Without Distractions”
The target audience includes those who are constantly communicating in their professional and private lives and who have constant demands to pursue. “My or our observations are that very few people really have these opportunities where they are really alone and with themselves. Space just offers amazing opportunities because there are no distractions,” says the 55-year-old.

Those who want to see more about the extraordinary life of the two can do so on Friday at 8.45 pm in the program “Heimatleuchten” on ServusTV.
