Austria urgently needs workers. just where from? From abroad is an option. But what appeals to Austria? Answering this question turns out to be a tough nut to crack.
Nearly 200,000 vacancies cannot currently be filled. Skilled workers are scarce. Qualified immigration is urgently needed to meet this demand. Current figures show that 15 years ago about one in ten employees came from abroad, today that is almost one in four.
Since 2008, the number of employees in Austria has increased from 3.4 million to 3.9 million in 2022. More than 90 percent of this increase is due to foreign employees. That is the conclusion of the research institute Agenda Austria.
200,000 vacancies
So Austria needs immigrants for the labor market – but it is not alone. The whole of Europe is looking for the brightest minds. The competition is correspondingly tough. Austria can therefore use all the help. The resourceful German businessman Michael Schulze felt the same way and wanted to create a platform for qualified immigration to Austria with the title “Austria as a country of the future”.
Just ask
“I come from market research. And especially politicians bring up this topic again and again. That’s why we wanted to put it in the center of attention with a free homepage. So we wrote to all members of the National Council, the parties and their representatives in the federal states, the 100 largest companies in Austria and the main players in the field of business representation and tourism. The question: is Austria a country of the future and what specifically distinguishes Austria? We wanted to publish these answers,” Schulze said of “Krone.” The response to hundreds of emails: zero.
Germany advertises out of frustration
Schulze: “Despite my memory, not a single Austrian representative answered the question. We have now redesigned the homepage. Country of the future Austria? No!” Now he would like to realize the project in his home country – for the German market.
