Flavia Franzoni, wife of former Italian Prime Minister and former head of the European Commission Romano Prodi, died on Tuesday while walking.
Franzoni was with a group on a walking tour of the Franciscan Way in the central Italian region of Umbria and had last stayed in Gubbio. The group was on its way to Assisi when the 76-year-old suddenly fell. A heart attack cannot be ruled out.
Franzoni and 83-year-old Prodi had been married since 1969. The couple has two sons. Prodi, who led the European Commission from 1999 to 2004, has already received numerous letters of condolence.
