A propaganda war is raging on social media beyond the battlefield in Ukraine. The most recent example of this is statements by Chechen leader Ramzan Kadyrov, who claimed that his cousin Adam Delimkhanov had gone missing and was asking Ukraine for help. Now he stated that his relative was alive and unharmed. He himself fueled the rumors of his disappearance to fool the Ukrainian media.
There were already reports there that Kadyrov’s nephew had died – along with 200 fighters from his troops after coming under fire in the Zaporizhia region. The Russian State Duma, of which Delimkhanov is a deputy, reported after the battle that he had been wounded. The Kremlin also expressed concern.
“Knew it from the start”
Now Ramzan Kadyrov claims on his Telegram account that he knew “from the very beginning” that his relative was doing well. He was “not even injured,” Putin’s “bloodhound” wrote on Wednesday. He shared a video of him and Delimkhanov sitting in front of a map. According to Kadyrov, the current situation is being discussed and Chechen units have been deployed to protect the Russian border region of Belgorod.
A few hours earlier, Kadyrov had written about his relative, “I just can’t find Adam Delimkhanov. He won’t contact you.” Chechen commander Apti Alaudinov also wrote that Kadyrov ordered him to find Delimkhanov “by any means necessary”.
With these statements, he wanted to show Ukrainians “how deep their media has sunk,” Kadyrov claimed. He “poured oil on the fire” and the “lies” were believed. Nor is it true that 200 Chechen fighters were killed.
Causing unrest in the information war
With such actions, the Chechen ruler is apparently trying to stir up unrest in the information war about Ukraine. After many times the Russian side has been proven to lie, Kadyrov also tries the other way around. In the so-called fog of war, where information is usually incomplete and insecure due to chaos, interrupted communication channels and enemy deception, such fragments of propaganda fall on both sides in fertile ground. A master of disinformation, who perfectly masters this game, is the head of the Wagner mercenary group, Yevgeny Prigoschin.
Russia has been waging an aggressive war against Ukraine for more than 15 months. In particular, Kadyrov’s fighters, notorious for their particular brutality, have recently been transferred to Marjinka. The town west of Donetsk, now largely destroyed, has been under trial by Russian troops for months.
