Massive rattle of sabers – Chinese media simulate missile attack on Taiwan

Date:

Tensions surrounding the conflict between Taiwan and China continue to rise. China makes no secret of the fact that it is also showing its muscles militarily. After the sea-based encirclement is currently being “practiced” around the island, the state media is also getting into the mood – now showing a simulation of how missiles would hit Taiwan.

Last year, a visit by the then president of the US parliament led to China conducting extensive military exercises off the coast of Taiwan. Now the visit by Taiwanese President Tsai Ing-wen last week, which has once again sparked controversy in China.

And the response is similar to last year’s: As state television channel CCTV reports, China practiced strikes against key targets on the island on the second day of its military maneuvers that began Saturday. The military simulated “joint precision strikes” against “key targets on the island of Taiwan and in surrounding waters,” CCTV reported.

Missiles hit island nation – at least in simulation
This is accompanied by graphical simulations showing massive air strikes from the mainland on the small island state. Currently, no fewer than 71 Chinese fighter jets, nine destroyers and one aircraft carrier are said to be stationed around Taiwan. The three-day exercise functions under the name “single sharp sword”.

US urges restraint
A US State Department spokesman had previously said in light of the maneuvers that Washington is closely monitoring China’s actions. “We have always called for restraint and not to change the status quo,” he added. Channels of communication with Beijing remained open. At the same time, the ministry spokesman stressed that the US has “sufficient resources and capabilities in the region to ensure peace and stability and fulfill our national security obligations.”

Macron: Neither the US nor China follow suit
French President Emmanuel Macron spoke from Europe on Sunday. He insisted that Europe must follow its own strategy in the conflict. “The worst thing would be to think that we Europeans would become adherents of this subject and would have to follow either the American style or a Chinese overreaction,” Politico magazine quoted him as saying.

Europe should not contribute to the escalation of the conflict, but pursue its own position as the third pole between the US and China, Macron said in an interview with Politico and French newspaper Les Echos during his three-day visit to China this week.

Taipei is under increasing pressure from Beijing. Since the split between China and Taiwan in 1949, Beijing has regarded the island as a separate area that it wants to reunite with the mainland – by military force if necessary. Taipei condemned the maneuver and accused Beijing of endangering regional security.

Insider: “Taiwan is not their only target”
The Chinese military described the three-day military exercise near Taiwan as a “warning” to “separatist forces”. As the Reuters news agency reported, citing an insider, the Chinese military had simulated air and sea strikes against “foreign military targets”.

“Taiwan is not their only target,” said the insider, who is familiar with the security situation in the region. “It’s very provocative.” He spoke on condition of anonymity as he was not authorized to speak to the press.
