Russia’s close ally Belarus has launched a major military exercise. According to information from Minsk, this involves units of the operational command, special forces, missile forces, artillery, air force and anti-aircraft defense.
The Defense Ministry in Minsk did not provide details on Friday about the number of troops deployed or the technology used. At least in the first part of the exercise, troops should be moved to designated maneuver areas and reinforce their positions there.
Then the actual combat exercises should begin. Military training areas were mentioned in the Brest region on Belarus’ western border with Poland and in the Gomel region in the east on the border with Russia. Both regions border Ukraine from the north.
Close friendship with Russia
Belarus is closely allied with Russia under dictatorial ruler Alexander Lukashenko. Moscow has stationed tactical nuclear weapons in Belarus and has also used the neighboring country as a staging area for the war against Ukraine.
