Vladimir Putin continues to “Russify” the occupied territories in Ukraine. Now “elections” in the annexed territories are intended to further strengthen Moscow’s influence.
Russia has announced “elections” for September 10 in the Russian-occupied territories of Ukraine. Regional parliaments and local councils must be elected, the Russian election commission announced on Thursday.
It revolves around four regions in the east and south of Ukraine – Luhansk, Donetsk, Zaporizhia and Kherson. Moscow declared the territories annexed last year.
Putin’s ‘Russification’ of Eastern Ukraine
As recently as April, Russian ruler Vladimir Putin signed a decree declaring the Ukrainians in the territories “foreigners”. The scheme will take effect on July 1. Ukrainians who refuse to become Russian should then be able to be expelled more easily. This is intended to promote the “Russification” of the occupied territories.
This also includes renaming streets or destroying monuments and Ukrainian cultural sites. In the past, Ukrainian leaders have repeatedly drawn attention to forced resettlements. Above all, people who are “pro-Ukrainian” would be smuggled into Russia.
