The lower house of the Belarusian parliament has passed a draft law allowing for criminal prosecution of the dead.
With a new law, Belarus is taking the category of crimes for which there is no statute of limitations to a new level – because even the criminal’s death does not protect him from the consequences. This applies, for example, to waging a war of aggression, terrorism, genocide or ecocide, writes the Belarusian news portal Serkalo.
Next of kin can then represent the interests of the deceased in court, if necessary a lawyer can also do this.
According to the Belta news agency, the draft law was drafted against the background of a study on the genocide of the Belarusian people in World War II and in the post-war period. Those involved should therefore still be able to be prosecuted today.
