A cat who is only a few months old is currently recovering from a long journey at the Pfotenhilfe animal shelter. The four-legged friend got lost in Hungary in the engine compartment of a car from Salzburg.
On Sunday, a Seekirchner drove his car home from a short holiday in Csömödér, Hungary. Once there, he heard a pathetic meowing sound coming from the engine compartment of his vehicle. It soon became apparent that a kitten was crouching under the hood and had apparently been hiding there for the entire five-hour drive. The man took the stowaway to the Pfotenhilfe animal shelter in the border area of Salzburg in Upper Austria the next day.
Cat must be quarantined
There the animal was identified as a tomcat just a few months old. The animal was unharmed except for an ear mite infestation. The male must now be quarantined for 30 days and can then be placed – after approval by the vet.
“could be fatal”
Pfotenhilfe boss Johanna Stadler says: “The fact that the brave boy survived this long journey in the engine compartment unscathed is really a great stroke of luck.” And: “This dangerous experiment could have ended in severe burns or even death. However, this is not the first time we hear about cases where cats stowaway in the engine compartment. But distances of several hundred kilometers are rather the exception.”
