Tyrol’s police leadership on Friday justified their alleged reluctance to intervene against the climate activists. The judiciary is extremely restrictive when it comes to dissolving assemblies.
The wave of protests of the last generation hit parts of Innsbruck again on Friday. Climate activists marched on the Südring in the morning towards the city center and again caused major traffic jams in the morning traffic. But politics itself felt the breath of the last generation. Because in the morning, accredited climate activists came to the Innsbruck country house and interrupted an event organized by Transport Councilor René Zumtobel (SPÖ).
The police accounted for the balance sheet
In the afternoon, the Tyrolean police took stock of the activists’ “blockade week”. “We had 13 meetings to process, four of which were disbanded,” Helmut Tomac, director of the state police, said at a news conference. A total of 102 advertisements were placed against the activists.
“We acted independently of various acclaim and according to the judiciary of the highest courts,” Tomac justified the work of executive justice at the beginning with a swipe at one politician or another. All blockades were not recorded, the authorities have no right to dissolve such gatherings, Tomac stressed. That is only possible if a gathering brings social life to a standstill in one area.
Florian Greil, the deputy head of the security police, made it clear how modest the range of administrative fines was for unannounced demonstrations. Only the event manager can be prosecuted, the maximum fine is 720 euros, in the first case usually only around 40 euros. Even a display according to the road traffic regulations only qualifies with a fine of 72 euros.
Police director also self-critical
As is known, the blockade of the Brenner motorway was lifted on Thursday. “On Tuesday, when the activists closed Hötting, one of the five meetings should have ended,” Tomac said self-critically. The criticism of lazily watching when a doctor was initially not allowed through was also justified.
The activists informed the control center before any blockade and acted completely non-violently. Nothing is known about the fact that the care suffered from medical emergencies.
