The storm “Charly”, which raged over Austria on Friday night, caused numerous operations. In the federal capital, the helpers of the Viennese professional fire brigade had to be deployed a total of 70 times. Fortunately, the wind had already died down in the morning hours. Some places even reported record highs!
The striking cold front that passed over the country from the northwest and southeast caused the wind to suddenly increase around 10 p.m. on Thursday. Especially in the east: Wind gusts of up to 108 km/h were measured in the center of Vienna, on the Hohe Warte and in Unterlaa.
More than 150 km/h at the Rax mountain station
In Wiener Neustadt there was even a storm with a speed of 112 km/h; according to the storm center, a monthly record was also set in Buchberg with 137 km/h. There was also a record at the Rax mountain station with 151 km/h and at the anniversary tower in Vienna with 139 km/h.
The red warning level was declared in large parts of the east of the country on Thursday. As of midnight, there were about 70 operations for the Vienna Professional Fire Brigade – in addition to the usual number of operations. It was mainly loose branches and fallen trees that had to be removed, but also fallen parts and loose scaffolding elements had to be secured. According to the professional fire brigade, no one was injured during these operations. Because the wind has decreased considerably, a large number of additional missions are no longer expected.
It was also stormy in Upper Austria. But ‘Charly’ couldn’t get most firefighters out of bed. Some trees were blown down, but all the roofs of the houses are still in place and no one was injured. Even on Friday morning, the severe weather center reported no more warnings for showers.
There were also 120 fire brigade operations in Lower Austria. Klaus Stebal from the regional command said in response to a request in the morning that the focus was on the Vienna region. Helpers have also been deployed in the Weinviertel, in Waidhofen an der Ybbs in the Mostviertel or in Schrems in the Waldviertel district in Gmünd.
