Dancing, drinking and joking about the Corona rules: A video showing the lockdown violations by British Conservatives made headlines in Britain this weekend. The 45-second clip, released on Saturday night by the tabloid The Mirror, shows people partying at a time when they shouldn’t. A dancing couple turns around and nearly crashes into the buffet. Several are seen holding wine glasses and beer bottles.
There are signs on the walls asking for social distancing to be observed. A conversation can be heard in the background: “Are you filming this?” someone asks. Finally, a man says, “As long as we’re not streaming, we’re breaking the rules.”
Now criminal consequences can follow
They are said to be photos of a Christmas party for conservative activists in December 2020. The party was hosted by then-Conservative mayoral candidate Shaun Bailey. Photos of this were already known, but so far have not led to criminal prosecution. According to the “Mirror” report, that could now change. The Metropolitan Police, which has already issued more than 100 fines for illegal celebrations in London’s government district, wants to see if an investigation is launched.
At the time, there were strict rules about contact restrictions in the corona pandemic. People from different households were not allowed to meet indoors.
Video could also have implications for former Prime Minister Johnson
The video comes at a bad time, especially for former Prime Minister Boris Johnson. On Monday, the House of Commons will vote on whether the Conservative politician should be banned from parliament. That was recommended by a committee that accused Johnson of repeatedly lying to parliament in the so-called Partygate scandal. The video shows a man Johnson recently decorated.
