Helicopter mission – 20 centimeter stone falls on climbers

Date:

This is certainly not how the two alpinists from Germany had imagined their climb. In the early hours of Sunday, they climbed from Scheffau towards the Schneekars on the Wilder Kaiser to climb the Sonnenpfeiler climbing route. But before it could really start, one of the two was hit by a stone.

This climb was over before it could really start. Two experienced alpinists from Germany, aged 49 and 57, climbed from Scheffau in Tyrol to the Schneekar on the Wilder Kaiser on Sunday morning to climb the Sonnenpfeiler climbing route. Around 8:30 am, the two reach the start of the climb. The 57-year-old climbed the first pitch in the lead. At the belay he grabbed the rope. Even before the second climbed out of the fuse, for reasons still unknown, a stone of about 20 centimeters fell over the 49-year-old and fell in his direction. The alpinist was hit in the right thigh.

Pain too great to descend into the valley
The pain prevented the man from descending into the valley. For this reason, his climbing partner made the emergency call and the injured person was flown by helicopter to the hospital in Kufstein.
