At least 13 people have been killed after a tropical cyclone swept through southern Brazil. Four people are still missing.
“Following the discovery of two more bodies in the village of Caraá, the death toll rises to 13, including a four-month-old baby,” the state’s civil defense said Monday. In Caraá, the search for the last four missing continues.
Massive destruction by cyclone
The cyclone hit the state of Rio Grande do Sul, which borders Uruguay and Argentina, on Thursday and Friday. The homes of more than 3,700 residents were damaged and about 84,000 people were still without power on Sunday. More than 700 people had already been evacuated. Hundreds of people are housed in a community center in the hardest-hit coastal town of Caraá.
In recent years, Brazil has repeatedly been hit by deadly weather disasters, which experts say are being exacerbated by climate change. In February, at least 65 people died in the southeastern state of São Paulo after torrential rains caused flooding and landslides.
