Custody for Duo – Planned Pride Attack: 20-year-old released

Date:

After three suspects aged 14 and 20 allegedly planned an attack on the Vienna Pride last Saturday and two of them were arrested, the 20-year-old was released from prison on Monday morning. There is “no pressing suspicion” about him. Interior Minister Gerhard Karner (ÖVP) praised the actions of the authorities on Monday. There have been corresponding investigations, “always in close consultation with the judiciary”.

The possibly planned Islamist attack on the 27th Rainbow Parade for LGBTIQ rights still leaves you dumbfounded. The three suspects were arrested on Saturday afternoon – about an hour before the parade started moving. Two of the suspects were subsequently taken into custody on Sunday due to the risk of committing a crime.

Older brother released
A 20-year-old – the brother of the 17-year-old – was able to leave St. Pölten prison on Monday. The detention period runs until July 3. The release is not yet final, says Birgit Eisenmagen, spokeswoman for the regional court in St. Pölten. In the case of the third suspect, there is “no pressing suspicion,” Eisenmagen said, without giving details.

The public prosecutor can still appeal the decision. The court has not provided information on whether and how the suspect responded to the allegations during the detention hearing.

Investigate criminal organization
It is determined against the suspected Islamists because of terrorist organization and criminal organization. Jurisdiction is based on the place of residence of the brothers registered in the provincial capital of Lower Austria. The 14-year-old lives in Vienna.

“People’s safety is always paramount”
Interior Minister Karner stressed that “people’s safety is always paramount”. That the public was not informed until Sunday was “thoughtfully” and “objectively justified”. He referred to statements made by the head of the Directorate of State Security and Intelligence (DSN), Omar Haijawi-Pirchner: When asked on Sunday whether the event would be canceled, he said this was “of course discussed” beforehand.

At the start of the event, however, there was “no concrete risk situation” anymore. The organization of the parade also thanked for the intervention, reports Karner.

Suspects were ‘under control at all times’
In the Ö1 “Morgenjournal” on Monday, Haijawi-Pirchner also stressed that the suspects were “under our control at all times”. The late entry at noon on Saturday was due to “operational and criminal tactical” reasons.
