According to British intelligence reports, the dispute between the Wagner mercenary group and the Russian Ministry of Defense is escalating. Britain’s Defense Ministry quoted Wagner chief Yevgeny Prigozhin on Tuesday as saying he was demanding a response to a “contract” he had submitted to Russia’s Defense Ministry.
This was in response to an ultimatum that “volunteer formations” should be placed under the ministry.
Under the ultimatum, Wagner and other units must report contractually to the Department of Defense until July 1.
tone of voice “confrontational”
While the exact contents of Prigozhin’s “treaty” are not known, the mere handover increases the risk in this internal conflict and is “most likely another deliberate attempt to undermine the authority of official military authorities,” London said. Prigozhin’s tone towards the Defense Ministry has been described as clearly confrontational.
Wagner: 32,000 offenders pardoned
Whatever the Wagner boss announced: 32,000 men who strengthened the ranks of the mercenary group are now being released after their service (see video above). They were recruited for military service in Russian prisons. They had honored their contract and commitment to the fights, Prigozhin said on Sunday. In the past, women’s and human rights activists had expressed concern that so many criminals – including murderers – would be released prematurely into Russian society.
Prigozhin, a close confidant of Vladimir Putin’s Kremlin chief, himself recruited some prisoners into the penal camps. Putin pardoned those who subsequently signed military service contracts. The condition was to complete at least six months of combat missions in Ukraine.
