The “G2lobal Gender Gap” index annually measures the current status and development of gender equality in a total of 146 countries in the following key areas: economic participation and equal opportunities, educational attainment, health and political participation. This year, the Alpine Republic is ranked 47 – a drop of 26 places from last year!
According to the World Economic Forum in the 17th edition of the report, the global development of gender equality is largely stagnant. There is no rapprochement, rather a – global – standstill. Without development, it will take another 131 years before women and men get equal opportunities.
It will take even longer to achieve economic equality. This should not be possible until the year 2192.
Compared to 2022, the gender gap has narrowed by only 0.3 point. The reason is the corona pandemic and its aftermath. Women in particular are burdened more heavily by rising costs of living and insecurity in the labor market.
The Global Gender Gap Index measures scores on a scale of 0 to 100. Scores can be interpreted as the path to equality (hence the percentage of the gender gap that has been closed). Comparisons between countries help identify the most effective measures to close gender gaps.
Global results and time for equality
The global value for the gender gap in 2023 is 68.4 percent for all 146 countries included in this edition. Looking at the constant sample of 145 countries, the overall score improved from 68.1 percent to 68.4 percent – an improvement of 0.3 percentage points from last year’s edition.
