The suspect then attacked the officer several times with a knife and stabbed him in the upper arm. While the injured police officer was released after treatment at Lienz hospital, the alleged attacker had to undergo surgery on Tuesday afternoon. “So far, the 37-year-old has not been questioned,” said a police spokesman for “Krone” on Wednesday morning. The investigations into the use of firearms by the police are carried out by a team of investigators from Tyrol. Reports circulated on Tuesday that these would be taken over by officials from another state.

AMS employees in psychological care
“After Tuesday’s incident, the case has come into effect that we have started crisis intervention. We have our own program for this and the employees receive psychological support,” explains Evelyne Thum, spokeswoman for AMS Tirol. She also assures that this attack was an absolutely “exceptional situation”: “Of course, something like this doesn’t happen more often”. in Austria, but that is not the order of the day.

Should the “worst case” arise, the AMS also has its own security concept and agents who know how to proceed. That was also the case in Lienz. In addition, there is a call for help button on the computers for all employees, which indicates to colleagues in the office that something is wrong.

The AMS in Lienz is a smaller office compared to other district capitals in Tyrol. About 25 employees work there and almost all of them were present at the time of Tuesday’s attack.
