A violent explosion shook the center of Paris on Wednesday evening. Police said 16 people were injured, seven of them seriously. Videos on the online networks show that the facade of a multi-storey house has largely collapsed.
According to district mayor Florence Berthout, the cause of the explosion in the fifth arrondissement was a gas leak. According to police, the building partially collapsed from the ensuing fire.
The destroyed house housed the fashion design school Paris American Academy.
Emergency services cordoned off the area in the Latin Quarter in central Paris. Firefighters are trying to extinguish the building. The enormous plume of smoke from the fire could be seen in much of the city.
Prosecutor determined
The center of Paris was packed on Wednesday evening, as June 21 is traditionally a city-wide music festival with numerous concerts. The public prosecutor’s office has launched an investigation into bodily injury due to negligence.
