Was looking for his mother – baby hedgehog lay blind and helpless in a meadow

Date:

A helpless and still blind baby hedgehog was found by animal lovers in a meadow in Lienz (East Tyrol). The animal child may have crawled out of the nest because the mother had not returned.

“The little hedgehog baby must have left his nest out of desperation. They only do that if the mother doesn’t come back and he must have been the bravest of the little ones,” explains hedgehog expert and animal lover Manuela Kurath from Leibsdorf. She got the little boulder from the Hedgehog aid Austria taken to cheer him up.

Baby hedgehog is only 14 days old
Unfortunately, the nest was not found to save the other hedgehog children. At least the little one was lucky. He is now raised on milk, fennel tea and his own digestive powder. “He should be 14 days old now and just opening his eyes,” said Kurath.

When he can feed himself, the little hedgehog goes to the outdoor enclosure, where he is prepared for his release. He is then even trained to provide himself with worms and insects. The faeces are also sent for inspection. If all goes well, the hedgehog can be released in the fall.

Manuela Kurath has already successfully raised, hibernated and released seven hedgehogs into the wild. She is regularly visited by her boulders. “With the bad insect situation and the sterile gardens, it is even good to feed hedgehogs all year round,” says the animal lover, who regrets that so many hedgehogs have to die on the road every year.

“A little caution would be in order,” emphasizes Kurath. After all, the hedgehog is already one of the highly endangered species.
