In the Dobersberg Nature Park, a newborn calf has been rejected by its mother. Animal lover Martin Hampel took it in consultation with the guards. The veterinary clinic in Dobersberg also opened its doors for emergencies. The brave rescuers should succeed with their action: “Anton” is already rampaging!
In fact, the nature and hunting expert Martin Hampel only accompanied a wild herb expert from Vienna, who set off with a group in the Dobersberg Nature Park in the Waldviertel to the often medicinal plants. As a helper, the 57-year-old noticed that the chairman of the nature park, Leo Ledwinka, thought it was a pity that the detached antlers of a young deer could not be found in the fallow deer enclosure. So Hampel wanted to help and entered the fence.
Kalb was all alone
Instead of the antlers, he made an extraordinary find: a male fallow deer calf huddled in the corner and all alone, powerless, almost starving. After it was 100 percent certain that the mother had abandoned her calf, the rescue operation followed: in consultation with Ledwinka, who had not noticed the animal until then, Hampel wrapped it in clothing.
The veterinary clinic was immediately involved in the rescue
The veterinary clinic Dobersberg is also open for this emergency. The doctor confirmed: “The calf was severely dehydrated. It received infusions and antibiotics”, the naturalist praises the exemplary effort. That the little one, whom he called “Anton”, was over the dam, was far from said.
“Anton” had enough of a special milk mix
To strengthen him, he gave him a mixture of goat milk and powdered cat milk. Just a day later it was alive and kicking. The rescuer is also accepted as “mother”: he imitates special sounds of the mother animal, “Anton” answers and runs to him. Martin Hampel now wants to raise the fallow deer. “A challenging and responsible task”, experts emphasize. But Hampel is determined. Apparently the beginning of a wonderful friendship!
