Only recently did a Viennese circus come under fire when its escaped alpacas crippled the express train. Now photos show once again how little animal-friendly the showmen treat the four-legged friends in their care.
Animal rights activists have long criticized a circus that frequents Vienna’s Margareten Belt for violating animal welfare law in the way it is held and during the shows. The ringmaster himself was also exposed once for his brutal handling of a pony. The video that has now been leaked to the association against animal factories (VGT) frighteningly surpasses everything that has come before it.
With a stranglehold
Completely unscrupulous and with no respect for the animal, the showman helps a woman cram alpacas into a car – and then thinks it’s funny. The animals panic and fight back en masse, only to be brutally grabbed by the neck and held in a stranglehold.

VGT’s Heidi Lacroix is angry: “He always presents himself in the media as an animal lover who only wants the best for the circus animals. Such videos then show the ringmaster’s true nature. There is nothing to justify or cover up the fear inflicted on these alpacas when they are miscarried in a suitcase. Not to mention the danger to other road users!”
And further: “The circus now has to answer not only to the authorities, but also to those who previously bought its fairy tales from the animal-loving ringmaster. Such a person should have nothing to do with animals!”
On Wednesday, June 28, the VGT will protest before the circus performance at 5 p.m.
