A big sigh of relief in the border area between Tyrol and Bavaria: the 52-year-old e-biker, who disappeared without a trace during a tour on Thursday afternoon, was found unharmed by the German police on Friday morning. Searches were launched on both sides of the border after the man traveling with his wife failed to show up at an agreed meeting point.
The 52-year-old e-biker was on Tuesday afternoon with his wife on forest roads between Bayralm, Schwaigeralm and Gufferthütte. The man decided to take a different route than his wife. Both should finally have met again on a forest path between the Bayralm and the Schwaigeralm.
Woman raised the alarm
But the 52-year-old did not show up at the agreed meeting point. After a while his wife raised the alarm. In the late afternoon, the German police then started a search in the Wildrlochberg area in the border area between Austria (Brandenberg Alps) and Germany (Kreuth near Tegernsee).
Last seen in Alm
It turned out that the man held out around 6:30 p.m had been seen by the landlady of the Bayralm. “Since the search by the Rottach mountain rescue service in the municipality of Kreuth did not yield any further information about the whereabouts of the man, the search area was extended to Austrian territory and thus to the municipality of Brandenberg,” the police said.
Five mountain rescuers from the Kramsach site then searched the area of the Kaiserhaus and Archduke Johann-Klause together with a police patrol. “No trace of the missing has been found on any of the trails. Attempts were made on the German side to deploy a drone and a helicopter. Due to the bad weather conditions and the upcoming thunderstorms, the helicopter could not be deployed,” the researchers continue.
The search was suspended overnight and resumed Friday morning.
“Connexion unfortunate circumstances”
Then on Friday morning it was clear: the 52-year-old was found unharmed by a police patrol on a bike path in Bavaria. “As it turned out, it was a succession of unfortunate circumstances.
The couple probably missed each other at the agreed meeting point. The man apparently wanted to meet his wife – but she had chosen a different route for the descent. “So they drove past each other without meeting,” said the detectives.
The man then drove back to the Gufferthütte via the Johannklause and on towards Achenwald. “When it got too dark, he slept in a bus shelter in Achenwald. Unfortunately, the batteries of the two mobile phones that the man had with him were also empty. Moreover, there is sometimes no reception at all on this mountain bike tour.”
