After Saturday’s unprecedented escalation, many questions remain unanswered. Russia expert Gerhard Mangott classifies the situation in an interview with krone.tv: Wagner boss Yevgeny Prigoschin continues, the current situation is only an “intermediate solution”. And he criticizes a statement by Chancellor Karl Nehammer (ÖVP)…
According to the renowned Russia expert, Prigozhin’s advance on Moscow was “an attempted armed insurrection”. Since he had to realize halfway through that no one was in solidarity with him, he now had to accept the “intermediate solution”. “It’s the end of the first act in a longer drama,” says Mangott.
Will Putin liquidate Prigozhin?
Prigozhin’s criticism has so far mainly hit the Russian defense minister and chief of staff. The uprising was now also a “clear break with Putin”. The Russian president is now weakened and therefore he cannot settle for this “intermediate solution”. “Prigozhin won’t do well with that,” says Mangott. If Prigozhin is not silent, then – in Putin’s eyes – he should be “liquidated”.
No more attempted rebellion
Reports that Prigozhin will now go to Belarus have yet to be confirmed. One thing is clear to the professor of political science: “Prigozhin will continue!” He therefore expects that there will be “a second and third act” and that Prigozhin will continue his criticism. However, Mangott does not currently see another attempt at rebellion.
“Nehammer’s statement shows that he does not understand the situation”
For the chancellor to convene the crisis team for Sunday was reasonable from Saturday’s point of view, according to Mangott. However, Nehammer’s statement that nuclear weapons “must not fall into the wrong hands” showed that “he doesn’t necessarily understand the situation.” He hopes that Nehammer will be advised by the relevant experts on Sunday and then “gain more insight into the complicated internal situation”. According to Mangott, there is currently no nuclear risk.
