The city is trying to defend itself after the withdrawal of its soldiers in the neighboring Ukrainian region of Kherson
Russia announced this Friday that they are working to strengthen the Crimean peninsula annexed in 2014 after the withdrawal of its soldiers in the neighboring Ukrainian region of Kherson in light of the Kiev counter-offensive, Sergei Aksionov, Moscow’s appointed governor, said.
However, he stressed that the security of Crimea “is mainly through measures to be applied in the territory of the Kherson region”, in the south of Ukraine, bordering the peninsula, he added.
This announcement comes after Russian troops staged a humiliating withdrawal into the Kherson region last week after failing to stop a counter-attack by Ukrainian soldiers.
The withdrawal of the Russian army from the eponymous regional capital of Kherson has allowed Kievan troops to move their equipment closer to Crimea, which has already been the target of several attacks in recent months.
In October, the Crimean bridge, which connects the peninsula to Russian territory, was partially destroyed in an attack that Moscow attributed to Ukraine and reported a truck bomb.
Since its annexation in 2014, Russia considers Crimea part of its territory, a claim not recognized by the international community. Ukraine claims it wants to retake the peninsula.
