In the affair of government documents found in a raid on ex-US President Donald Trump after he left office, key evidence of a criminal act by the Republican could now have become public. In the audio recording that emerged, Trump apparently confirmed that some of the papers were unreleased papers found on his Mar-a-Lago property.
The television channel CNN and other media had already reported in early June that the audio recording would be released in 2021. Trump’s following statement can be heard: “As president I could have released it, now I can’t.” Specifically, it appears to be a secret Pentagon document about an attack on Iran, which the 77-year-old leaves to look around.
Joe Biden’s predecessor repeatedly claimed classified information was no longer classified after it was taken to his private home in Mar-a-Lago, Florida. The recording could undermine Trump’s argument.
The Federal Police FBI had searched Trump’s Mar-a-Lago estate in August and seized numerous classified documents from his tenure, some of them at the highest level of classification. Storing confidential government documents in private rooms after his term in office could have made Trump a criminal offence. He was charged in the affair in mid-June and had to appear in person in federal court in Miami.
Trump pleaded “not guilty”. It was the first time a former US president had appeared in federal court to face charges. The process itself begins in mid-August.
