After the dramatic accident on a Baltic Sea ferry between Poland and Sweden, a mother and her child died on Friday. The two went overboard in the Baltic Sea on Thursday. When the eight-year-old and his mother were pulled from the water, they still showed signs of life. The Polish public prosecutor assumes a murder case.
A spokeswoman for the Gdańsk County Prosecutor’s Office said the investigation is now being conducted into the “murder of a child and the suicide of the mother”. She did not give further details. The Swedish public prosecutor’s office announced on Friday that it had launched a preliminary investigation into murder, but was not looking for a suspect.
There were several explanations as to how exactly the incident on the ferry “Stena Spirit” came about. It was first said that the child fell into the water and the mother jumped after it. However, a spokeswoman for the shipping company Stena Line later told the Polish tabloid ‘Fakt’ that video surveillance footage had been viewed which did not confirm this version.
