“Too few people become pastors,” explains Anthony Sabbavarapu, explaining why he traveled to Salzburg from faraway India. From autumn he will preach in two communities in Flachgau. The Catholic Church is increasingly calling on clergy from abroad to counter the shortage of priests.
“There are too few local pastors in Salzburg,” says Anthony Sabbavarapu. The 37-year-old Indian came to Austria in 2018 to work as a Catholic pastor. As reported, the Archdiocese of Salzburg has to get more and more pastors from abroad to find enough staff for the churches. “People are happy that we want to work as a pastor. In Austria, too few want that,” says the Indian.
