Action in Florence – climate activists sprayed bodies with red paint

Date:

In Florence, five climate activists sprayed their bodies with red paint. They held up a banner that read, “We will not pay for fossil fuels.” Because the demonstration was not authorized, they filed a report.

The action was intended to draw attention to the need to fight the climate crisis. “Today (Monday) we pour this red paint on our bodies, a metaphor for the blood of martyrdom as we choose life in the face of the climate crisis,” the group Ultima Generazione (Last Generation) said in a statement. The members had gathered in front of the Baptistery of San Giovanni in Florence. According to the cathedral administration, the building was not damaged during the protest.

The action was intended, among other things, as a show of solidarity with two members of the Ultima Generazione, who were recently sentenced to nine months in prison with probation and a fine of 1,500 euros for protests in the Vatican Museums last year. It was not the first action in Florence (see video above).

Mayor: Attack on cultural heritage is ‘wrong message’
Florence mayor Dario Nardella has now called on the group to stop attacking cultural heritage. “I think that attacking cultural heritage, even if only symbolically and without causing material damage, sends the wrong signal. Nature and culture are sisters. Stop this form of protest and there will certainly be conditions for cooperation and constructive dialogue.”

The fight against environmental pollution must be carried out jointly by the population, the institutions and civil society. The five activists were taken to the city’s police barracks on Monday and reported. Their demonstration was not approved.
