Not often seen – giant butterfly landed in Wiener’s garden

Date:

A moth that had recently settled in the garden of a Krone reader-reporter in Vienna could hardly be overlooked. The animal had a wingspan of about 15 centimeters (see photo). An impressive find for the Viennese: the insect was a Viennese peacock moth. It is the largest butterfly in Central Europe.

While many insects cause fear and disgust in us humans, butterflies are more welcome than almost any other group of animals. Especially because of their often brightly colored wings. In his garden in Vienna, a man made a very exciting discovery. A giant butterfly had landed on a Crocs (shoe manufacturer) there. The animal is called the Viennese peacock moth.

Butterfly populations are declining sharply
The moth can have a wingspan of up to 17 centimeters and is the largest butterfly in Central Europe. The insect got its name because it was first discovered in Europe in Vienna. In Austria it can be found in the east, up to the northern Weinviertel and also in the southern Alps. Tragic: The species is declining in populations. The Viennese were all the more delighted to marvel at such a beautiful animal.

Viennese peacock moths are actually nocturnal animals. They occasionally swarm around light sources and resemble bats due to their size. However, you don’t have to be afraid of them.
