Search for missing persons – Vanesa (12) missing – what the police can do

Date:

Every year in Austria, between 10,000 and 12,000 people are reported missing, such as 12-year-old Vanesa from Upper Austria. Although the majority of missing persons report after a short time, about two percent of cases remain unsolved. What the police do when someone goes missing.

If a person is reported missing via the number 133 or at a police station, the circumstances will first be asked. “Of course, the search always depends on the circumstances. If a person has not been seen for a year, the measures are different than when a child does not come home from school,” explains Stephan Mayer of the Competence Center for Departing Persons (KAP) of the Federal Criminal Police Department.
