Great excitement – woman in street clothes and headscarf flew out of the bathroom

Date:

For the organization SOS Human Rights it is clear discrimination. Because a Somali woman was thrown out of the Schörgenhubbad in Linz because she had accompanied a school class in street clothes and a headscarf.

For the organization SOS Human Rights, the incident is clear discrimination on the basis of origin and especially religion. For Linz AG it is a question of swimming regulations. But what happened? Last Friday there was an incident in the Schörgenhubbad in Linz. A Somali woman who supervised a school class as a school assistant did so in full street clothes and a headscarf.

Lifeguard asked her to leave
The lifeguard asked her to leave the pool. A verbal altercation ensued, which ended with the woman being removed from the bathroom. Reportedly also under the “malicious applause of other swimmers”, reports the ORF Upper Austria. However, Linz AG stated: “The incident did not take place in the outdoor pool, but in the hall. And it was not about the headscarf, it was about the fact that street clothing is simply not allowed in the hall.”

This is how Linz AG took a position
“After checking and consultation with the pool staff, the incident in question happened at the end of June 2023, not in the outdoor pool as reported in the article, but in the indoor pool of the adventure oasis Schörgenhub. The headscarf was also not objected to. The reason for the referral to the swimwear rule and the subsequent request to leave the swimming area was to wear transparent street clothes, which is also proven by existing video material.”

It’s in the swimming rules
The bathing regulations of the Linz AG swimming pools stipulate that normal swimwear must be worn during your stay in our swimming pools. Think of swimming trunks, swimming shorts, one-piece or multi-piece swimsuits or bathing suits, monokini, bikini, tankini, burkini, swimming diapers for babies and small children and similar articles of the right fabric (no cotton!).

In exceptional cases, sporty clothing is also allowed
For supervisors (teachers, assistants,…) who are only at the edge of the swimming pool, sporty clothing (such as sports pants/shorts and T-shirt) is exceptionally allowed. These rules apply to all bathers regardless of age, gender, religion or origin.
