Authorities in the Ukrainian capital Kiev have said a man accused of a terrorist attack blew himself up in a court on Wednesday after a failed escape attempt. “The offender died at the scene of the crime,” Interior Minister Ihor Klymenko wrote on Telegram.
Earlier, the man would have tried to free himself with an explosive. According to the prosecutor’s office, the suspect, who was escorted to court by police officers, tried to escape through the toilet of the courthouse. He detonated an explosive device, the authority wrote on his Telegram channel. Then he hid in court.
According to official information, the police only fired warning shots. Two police officers were injured by the explosions.
Charged with throwing hand grenades
Klymenko later told journalists that the alleged perpetrator was the suspect who threw a hand grenade in front of the Ukrainian parliament on August 31, 2015. At that time, four National Guardsmen were killed during violent protests against a constitutional amendment as part of the so-called Minsk peace process.
The constitutional amendments granted autonomy to Moscow-backed separatists in eastern Ukraine’s Donbass. The Minsk peace process finally failed with the Russian invasion more than 16 months ago.
