“Weapons needed” – Zelenskyj wanted to start a counteroffensive earlier

Date:

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky would have liked to see the counter-offensive to liberate Russian-occupied territories in his country begin “much sooner”. He told US and European partners “that we want to start our counteroffensive earlier and that we need all the weapons and equipment for that,” he told US broadcaster CNN. At least four people have been killed in a nightly rocket attack in Lviv.

Zelenskyi stressed the importance of longer-range ATACMS missiles, which Ukraine is requesting from the US, which could strike Russian targets far behind the front lines. The missiles would help Ukraine move faster, Zelenskyy said. He also pointed to shortfalls in equipping his troops with artillery. “In some directions, we can’t even think about starting it (the counteroffensive) because we don’t have the right weapons,” Zelensky said.

“Ukraine is unthinkable without Crimea”
The president of the attacked country once again made it clear what a reconquest of the Black Sea Crimean peninsula annexed by Russia in 2014 would mean for Ukraine. “We cannot imagine Ukraine without Crimea,” Zelensky said. “And as long as Crimea is under Russian occupation, that means only one thing: the war is not over yet.”

According to the Ukrainian president, he does not continuously consider the danger to his own life that the Russian offensive entails. “You can lock yourself in a cage like an animal and chain yourself up and keep thinking you’re about to be killed,” Zelenskyy told CNN. But that’s not an option for him. If he kept thinking about it, he would isolate himself – like Russian President Vladimir Putin, who does not leave his “bunker”. “If I isolate myself, I will no longer understand what is happening around me in the country,” Zelensky said. “I would lose connection with society. And if I lose that connection, I lose society.”

At least four dead in Lviv
Four people were killed in a rocket attack on a residential area in the western Ukrainian city of Lviv on Thursday night, according to the Interior Ministry. At least nine people were injured, the ministry reports via Telegram. A search and rescue operation is underway. According to the information, more than 60 people were evacuated from the destroyed houses. Seven people were rescued from the rubble.

The Ukrainian General Staff reported on Facebook that Ukrainian forces repelled Russian attacks on the village of Bohdanivka west of Bakhmut and south and north of the devastated city. In turn, Russia reported that Russian forces had defeated three Ukrainian army units near Bakhmut. The reports could not be independently verified.
