A violent thunderstorm raged over Tyrol and Salzburg on Wednesday evening. The emergency services were in continuous use. The aftermath of the storm is still clearly felt today. The result was flooding, mudslides and fire.
In Salzburg it crashed in the early evening. Saalbach and Piesendorf (Salzburg) were severely affected by the severe storm on Wednesday evening. Within a short time a storm front came up, bringing heavy hailstorms with it. Residents reported a rapidly rising, dark cloud front. “We had to park our car because it suddenly started to hail so hard that everything was white,” says an eyewitness. A cold front spread across the Alps bringing showers, especially in the eastern half, and isolated thunderstorms in the southeast.
Forest fire by lightning
But the Tamsweg district (Salzburg) also had to contend with lightning strikes and heavy rainfall in the evening hours of yesterday Wednesday. The ground also moved. In the Rothenwand district of the municipality of Zederhaus, a small-scale fire started at an altitude of 1,400 meters in a forest area. A pile of branches and twigs caught fire from a lightning strike. Thanks to the fire brigade, the fire could not spread.
Road diversion due to mudslide
Around 7:30 p.m., the B95 in the Tamsweg municipal area had to be diverted due to a small debris flow. The heavy rainfall had loosened the top layer of the dike – earth and peat slid off. Mauterndorf’s road maintenance service took over the removal of the debris.
Tuesday evening in the Oberland, a day later it was the Tyrolean Unterland’s turn. Violent storms swept over parts of Tyrol. Streets, underpasses and cellars were flooded, especially in the Kitzbühel and Kufstein districts. The fire brigade had to turn out 16 times.
Flooding and trees on the road in Tyrol
After the first hailstones had already cracked from the sky around 3 p.m., Floriani-Jünger was called for water damage in underpasses and in buildings. But individual missions were also reported in the rest of Tyrol. In Innsbruck, for example, a tree fell on the street and in Patsch a stream overflowed its banks. In the evening the situation calmed down again. There shouldn’t be any injuries.
Festival staff rescue rowers from distress
Although Vorarlberg was spared the storm, several rowers had to contend with wind and high waves on Lake Constance on Wednesday evening. These weather conditions were also their downfall. Three boats, occupied by five people, capsized. The festival staff recognized the seriousness of the situation and immediately came to the aid of the athletes with two boats.
