Did the protest go too far? – Greta Thunberg ends up in court in Sweden

Date:

Even after the end of her participation in the “school strikes for the climate”, Swedish activist Greta Thunberg never tires of taking part in further protests against the rapidly advancing climate change. Now she apparently has to answer for the first time before a Swedish court – the reason for this is a protest in Malmö.

The stumbling block is a blockade of the oil port in Malmö by the environmental group Ta tillbaka framtiden (Taking back the future; ed.). In June, to raise awareness against the use of fossil fuels, the activists tried to block the site’s entrances and exits – Thunberg was one of them.

This is reported by the regional newspaper “Sydsvenskan”. you and other people have refused to leave the facility despite instructions from the police. Those involved were eventually evacuated by emergency services.

Maximum penalty: 6 months imprisonment
According to “Sydsvenskan,” Thunberg is likely to be fined and a trial is scheduled for late July. Under Swedish criminal law, “failure to comply with police orders” is theoretically punishable by up to six months in prison. However, prosecutor Charlotte Ottesen told Sydsvenskan that the violation is usually punishable by a fine.

“I block tankers”
There is no doubt that Thunberg took part in the campaign – in addition to published photos of the campaign, the Swede herself reported her protest on social networks – including a photo of herself in front of a truck with the inscription: “Jag blockerar tankbilar” (“I block tankers”).

Meanwhile, the earth continues to warm up almost uncontrollably. The warmest day in recorded history to date was documented on Tuesday, replacing Monday as the previous record holder. The planet is still moving towards the irreversible next tipping point of the climate crisis.
